A liquid of high viscosity, such as printing ink, is applied to the printing cylinder in the following way. The ink is contained in a trough (1) in which a roller (2) is partly immersed so that as the roller rotates it becomes coated with ink. Excess ink is removed by a wiper blade (3) and the remaining ink is removed by a scraper (6) which is placed between the roller (2) and a first textured roller (4). This first textured roller has a surface with small depressions which receive the ink. A second textured roller (5) has a surface which meshes with the surface of the first textured roller. These surfaces enable the ink to be transferred to the second textured roller from which it is transferred to the printing cylinder by the transfer rollers (8,9). USE - Printing machines.
