PURPOSE:To improve the safety avoiding a hazard following a violent downshift by providing a trouble detecting means in a part of a speed change controlling actuator and controlling a line pressure to a minimum when a trouble is detected. CONSTITUTION:Providing a primary pulley 14 and a secondary pulley 15 with a pulley space variable by hydraulic cylinders 14a, 15a respectively on a main shaft 12 and a subshaft 13, a continuously variable transmission 4 winds a drive belt 16 linking between the primary pulley 14 and the secondary pulley 15. Supplying a line pressure in accordance with transmitting torque to each hydraulic cylinder 14a, 15a from a hydraulic control circuit 17, pulley pressing force is given, and by changing a proportion of a winding diameter of the drive belt 16 for the pulleys 14, 15 by the primary pulley, a continuously variable transmission condition is obtained. Here detecting a current in a speed change controlling solenoid valve in the hydraulic control circuit 17, by the detection result of the current, a trouble is decided in an electronic control unit 20, and the continuously variable transmission 4 is constituted so as to control the line pressure to a minimum when the trouble is decided.
