The subject of the invention is a photocoupler, the propagation medium of which consists of a gas 5, which is ionisable only with difficulty, contained in an enclosed space bounded by a hollow structure 3 which includes two openings facing each other and a vent hole 6, an electrooptic transducer 1, and an optoelectrical transducer 2, these transducers being fixed to the two openings of the structure 3; the gas is introduced into the enclosed space via the vent hole 6 which is then plugged up. The structure 3 is moreover electrically insulating. The photocoupler obtained has a high breakdown voltage whilst still having a short length, and its transfer speed, too, is high. The subject of the invention is also a method of manufacturing such a photocoupler. <IMAGE>
