A transmission for a vehicle comprises a pair of floating axles (3 and 25) emerging from the differential housing and connected to a respective double universal joint shaft (4 and 29) leading to the drive wheels. Each floating axles is connected at one end with the differential bevel wheels (30) in a torque transmitting manner and at the other end is radially supported in the differential housing (24). The floating axle ends and the end parts of the double universal joint shafts (4 and 29) are connected by locating the shaft in the axle end and engaged with each other by means of clutches (10 and 11) arranged outside the axle member (23). The floating axle connection of the one side is associated with a dual position clutch (11) and on the other side is associated with a triple position clutch (10), the former such clutch (11) making possible selective engagement of the floating axle (25) and the double universal joint shaft (29), while the latter clutch (10) is in the form of a double shift lever clutch (14 and 17) and makes possible selective engagement of the floating axle (3) and the double universal joint shaft (4) and furthermore the floating axle (3) and the differential housing (24). <IMAGE>
