Nematic liquid crystals with glass phases as solid, optically anisotropic media for producing optical components, e.g. compensators, prisms, plates having optical rotation, polarisers and also for thermo-electrooptical memory displays. New glass phase forming 1,4-bis-[2,3,4-substituted benzoyloxy]-benzenes have the general formula 1 <IMAGE> in which R1 to R6 and X have the significance indicated in the Patent Claims and are suitable for use in mixtures with one another or with other liquid crystalline or non-liquid crystalline substances for the production of solid, optically anisotropic media for optical components or thermo-electrooptical memory display.
