PURPOSE: To allow a relation between a map element and its name to be recognized at a glance by superimposing a pattern on data representing a selected map element and making the pattern suitable for superimposing on a name of the map element generated from a character generator. CONSTITUTION: An input/output interface 9 is provided with other bus 20 connecting to a bus 1, and a control unit 21, an image memory 22, a character generator 23 and a communication module 27 are connected to the bus 20. A set request is stored in a work memory of the control unit 21 and the character generator 23 is active to indicate a map element to be selected to other column of an image and a pattern to provide the display according to the prescribed expression criterion is generated. The pattern is superimposed on image data of the selected map element on request, loaded to the image memory 22 and transferred to a picture tube 26.
