The camshaft, for operating inlet and/or exhaust valves of cylinders of a four-stroke engine, is driven from the crankshaft with a rotary motion which is a combination of a smooth rotation and an oscillatory motion of variable amplitude. Both motions have a set phase relation to the crankshaft rotation. The speed of smooth camshaft rotation is half the crankshaft speed and the oscillations have a frequency f times the crankshaft rotation frequency. The value f is equal to 2 when n is 1, 1 or 2 when n is 2 and n divied by 2 when n is 3 or more. By this, the timing of a number of valves may be varied by adjustment of the amplitude of the oscillatory motion imposed on a common camshaft. |
