According to the invention, a device and a method are proposed for moving a weapon barrel backwards and forwards longitudinally in the axial direction, the device being connected by means of flexible hydraulic hoses both to a hydraulic system and to a filling connecting stub of a hydropneumatic barrel counter-recoil mechanism and to a filling connecting stub of a hydraulic barrel brake. Despite the device being of simple construction, it allows the backwards and forwards movement of a weapon barrel to be carried out continuously and at an adjustable speed, without snatching, for carrying out repair, test and adjustment tasks. The device is simple to operate and, because of its low weight and small size, can also easily be carried in an armoured vehicle. The device (10) according to the invention for moving a weapon barrel longitudinally in the axial direction into a weapon housing (56) of a firing post (weapon system) (52) comprises essentially one 4/3-way valve (24) having three switch positions (64, 66 and 68), a pressure-reducing valve (26) and two adjustable restrictor valves (36, 38), which are connected to one another. The device (10) is connected by means of two hydraulic hoses (20, 22) having quick-release couplings (18) to a pressure connection (14) and a tank connection (16) of a hydraulic system (12) on the input side.
