To signal faults in quick-change tap chucks, a battery-powered infrared transmitter fitted into the chuck is used instead of the hitherto realised method via limit or proximity switches, with the cable feeds put at risk by chip formation, or the transmitters, which can only be screened at great expense, in the method by means of radio signals. It is distinguished by battery-saving operation, low manufacturing and part costs on the one hand and low inventory and spare-parts stockkeeping costs on the other hand (both at the manufacturer's and the customer's), the latter owing to the fact that in standard application a single frequency of all chucks of an automatic production machine is sufficient.
