PURPOSE:To simply obtain a high resolving power image in a real time by low cost constitution, by performing automatic focusing on the basis of the comparing result of the peak values of the receiving echoes in a plurality of focal distances. CONSTITUTION:The delay quantity of the delay line 3 on each scanning line of sector scanning to each of a plurality of focal distances is preliminarily stored in a delay map 10. The delay quantity stored in the delay map 10 is read by a controller 1 to successively set the delay quantity of the delay line 3. The peak value of the receiving signal on the successive scanning line at that time is detected by a peak value detector 11 to be stored in a memory 12. The successively detected peak values are compared and the max. one is supplied to the controller 1. The focal distance imparting the max. peak value in the controller 1 is selected and the delay quantity corresponding to said focal distance is set to the delay line 3. |
