A refractory composition or cement contains conventional refractory materials and a long chain fatty acid comprising at least 8 carbon atoms in conjunction with reactive MgO as a temporary bonding agent. The reactive MgO may be caustically fired MgO, and/or finely ground magnesia and/or dolomite sintered powder. An extender such as an oil, lecithin, bitumen, tar, pitch or wax eg. soft wax may be included. The compositions are preferably used as ramming compositions for lining furnaces. |
