PURPOSE:To obtain metaxylene in high purity and yield, by bringing orthoxylene used as a raw material into contact with a zeolite catalyst selected from zeolite ZSM-4, zeolite omega and zeolite faujasite and then subjecting the reaction mixture to distillation separation. CONSTITUTION:Orthoxylene is brought into contact with a catalyst (especially preferably ZSM-4 or zeolite omega) containing at least one kind of zeolite selected from a group of zeolite ZSM-4, zeolite omega and zeolite faujasite under selective production state of metaxylene, especially at 50-250 deg.C and ordinary pressure-5kg/cm<2>G to give a reaction mixture mainly containing orthoxylene and metaxylene, which is then subjected to distillation separation to give metaxylene as main component. Further preferably the metaxylene-rich component is brought into contact with a zeolite having >=1.1 paraxylene/ metaxylene absorption ratio to provide the high-purity metaxylene. |
