This mechanism, which comprises a float carrying the seal (6) of the valve moving in a housing supplied with water via the cistern, is distinguished in that the cylindrical float (3) is formed, on the one hand, by an upper portion (3a) of large diameter, open at its top and not comprising any shoulder able to be located below the normal level (R1) of the water in the cistern (R) (in the closed position of the valve) and by a lower portion or appendage (3b-3c) of smaller diameter carrying the joint (6), and, on the other hand, is concentric with the said housing (4) so that the annular space (B) provided between its outer portion and the internal wall of the said housing is as small as possible. <IMAGE>
