Material such as insulation which has been extruded onto a cable 6 is cooled in a system 9, 10 while travelling along a path. A parameter of the cable, such as capacitance or cross-section, is sensed at spaced points 14, 15 or 16, 17 and an output signal is generated by comparator 21 therefrom.
