The present invention provides a process for preparing a surface-coated welding wire comprises preparing a base material; drawing the base material through a diamond die assembly to obtain a core wire; soaking the core wire in a first electroplating solution and electroplating an anti-oxidation layer on the core wire to obtain an anti-oxidized core wire; soaking the anti-oxidized core wire in a second electroplating solution and electroplating a surface layer on the anti-oxidized core wire to obtain a surface-coated core wire; and heating the surface-coated core wire to obtain the surface-coated welding wire. The process draws the base material before electroplating and follows by heating to repair defects occurring from drawing, ensure the anti-oxidation layer completely covers the core wire, and improves the smoothness of the anti-oxidation layer. The surface layer that covers the anti-oxidation layer can further improve the quality of the surface-coated welding wire.
