Provided is a non-scale-like carbon material that has a ratio I110/I004, between the peak intensity I110 of the (110) plane of a graphite crystal and the peak intensity I004 of the (004) plane, said ratio being obtained by powder XRD measurement, of 0.10-0.35, inclusive, an average circularity of 0.80-0.95, inclusive, and a d002 of 0.337 nm or less, wherein the total volume of pores having a diameter of 0.4 μm or less, said volume being measured by a nitrogen gas adsorption method, is 25.0-40.0 µl/g, inclusive, and the carbon material has a specific optical structure. This carbon material for a battery electrode maintains high cycling characteristics while having high capacity, high energy density, and high coulomb efficiency, and making it possible to obtain a low-resistance battery electrode that can be charged/discharged at high speed. |
