PURPOSE:To obtain the titled carbon fiber at low cost, by introducing a carbon compound together with a mixed gas made up of carbon monoxide and hydrogen into the heating zone followed by heating at specified temperatures in the presence of a metallic catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Using, as the carrier gas, a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the volume ratio of 95/5, a carbon compound (pref. a crude light oil) is introduced into the heating zone followed by heating at 600-1,300 deg.C (pref. 1,050-1,200 deg.C) in the presence of a metallic catalyst produced from an organic transition metal compound (pref. containing iron), thus obtaining the objective carbon fiber with vapor growth. |
