A pin (20) used in packages for microcircuits includes an annular boss (21). The boss (21) is formed on the pin (20) at the point where the pin (20) is to be embedded in a glass hermetic seal (12). Due to the greater surface area provided by the boss (21), minute cracking and chipping of the glass (12) at the point of contact with the pin (20) is minimized. Further, due to the boss (21), the flow of glass (12) up to the shaft of the pin (20) during the hermetic sealing process is retarded, thereby avoiding formation of a meniscus and all problems inherent therewith. Additionally, the boss (21) provides a focal point for pin flexion. When flexion occurs, the pin (20) will tend to bend on the outside of the hermetic seal (12) at the juncture of the pin shaft and the boss (21) rather than at the interior juncture of the pin shaft and the boss. In other embodiments an annular ceramic washer (32) is utilized instead of (Fig. 3) or in addition to (Fig. 4) the boss (21).
|
