In a known thermal printing method, the resistance heating elements, which can be heated up cyclically to a printing temperature by being provided with main current pulses, of a thermal printing head are preheated by preheating currents to a temperature level below the printing temperature. In this process, the actual instantaneous temperature conditions at the resistance heating elements are not taken into account so that reductions in the printing quality can occur. In each actuation cycle, the preheating currents are switched off during the cooling pause following the actuation of the resistance heating elements (R1...Rn) respectively intended for printing, up to a specific time at which the cooling temperatures have dropped below the preheating temperature. The preheating currents are controlled by controllable resistance elements (T1...Tn) which are connected in series with the resistance heating elements (R1...Rn) to a voltage source (V+). The new thermal printing method and the new thermal printing device relate to the preheating of a thermal printing head. <IMAGE>
