In a heater for the passenger compartment of motor vehicles, a heat exhanger through which a current of air to be heated passes and a blower are provided, the blower output of which is adjustable. The setting of the output of the blower is selected as a function of at least one heating criterion, such as for example fastest possible heating of the passenger compartment, and is a function of at least one influencing variable such as in particular the ambient temperature.
