When an analog display device is used for a plurality of measuring ranges, a plurality of scale graduations and characters are usually located on the dial. In order to improve the legibility of such display devices, the electronically controlled scale and dial generates only those scale graduations and characters which are required for the presently selected measuring range. An optoelectronic component, for example a liquid crystal display, is built into the display instrument instead of the conventional, usually printed, dial. The electronically controlled scale and dial is suitable in all those analog display devices where a plurality of scale graduations and characters are required. In addition, it is possible to overlay supplementary information, such as the physical unit of the measuring range. <IMAGE>
