An apparatus for trimming free-standing woody plants comprises a planing device (8) which is borne on an extension arm and comprises two roller bodies (16, 18) rotating in opposite directions. The woody plants are cut up by means of planing knives (22) arranged on the roller bodies, and the chips pass through openings (20), formed on the roller bodies, into the interior of said roller bodies. Ventilator blades (30) formed in the interior of the roller body generate an airstream which feeds the chips to a disposal system in the form of a hose. The planing device according to the invention ensures that the woody plants are cut cleanly and, at the same time, that cutting and disposal take place in a single operation. <IMAGE>
