In a method of recording the video signals onto a recording carrier, a recording signal (SY) is recorded onto the recording carrier for each picture line of a colour television picture. The frequency variation of the said signal corresponds to the brightness variation of the picture line and its frequencies lie within a predetermined frequency range (4). The colour recording signal (SF1), which represents the colour information of the picture line and is recorded onto the recording carrier, comprises for each picture line of at least one field a single carrier signal (TS1), which remains constant the whole time and onto which one or the other of the two colour component signals (U, V) representing the colour information of the picture line is modulated alternately from picture line to picture line and the recording frequency (f1) of which lies below the frequency range (4) for the brightness variation. <IMAGE>
