The present invention relates to a vacuum cleaner. According to an aspect of the present invention, the vacuum cleaner comprises: a cleaner body having a moving device for movement; a suction device which is connected to the cleaner body, sucks dust and air, guides the sucked dust and air to the cleaner body, and has a handle; a detection device to detect a movement of the suction device; and a control unit to determine whether a movement of the cleaner body is needed based on information detected by the detection device, and control the moving device if the movement of the cleaner body is needed. The control unit controls the moving device to allow the cleaner body to avoid an obstacle if avoidance of the obstacle is determined to be needed while the moving device is operated.
