<p>An apparatus for controlling the illumination of a display (62) used to present messages in a pager (10) is described. A microcomputer (16) is used for controlling the operation of the display (62) in response to a read switch (46) being actuated. A light switch (54), coupled to an illumination circuit (58) provides display illumination upon the light switch (54) being manually activated. The microcomputer (16) also couples to the light switch (54) to allow monitoring of the switch actuation. Upon actuation of the light switch (54), when a message is being displayed, the microcomputer (16) will maintain the illumination of the display (62), even after the light switch (54) has been released. Once the message has been read, the microcomputer (16) resumes monitoring the light switch (54), and the illumination of the display (62) is terminated.</p> |
