The subject matter of the invention comprises a method and a device for operating a bridging circuit (9) which is arranged in parallel with at least one circuit having a mechanical switching contact (1, 3). This circuit has a safety function for a technical process. Two solid-state switching elements having control electrodes are provided in parallel branches in the bridging circuit (9). When a switching-on command for the bridging circuit (9) occurs, switching-on and disconnection signals are in each case alternately applied to the switching elements, in such a manner that on and off states (conductive and non-conductive states) follow one another while at least one switching element is always on. In the event of a disconnection signal and a switching-on signal for the other switching element, each switching element is tested for the presence of the off state. <IMAGE>
