The invention relates to a writing instrument with a housing having a releasably connectable tip or cap, a writing medium carrier and a switching and locking mechanism, arranged in the housing, for advancing and retracting the writing medium carrier, which is under the action of a spring. At least one section of the housing is designed as a resiliently deformable crumple zone, and in this section the length of the housing can be shortened in the direction of the writing medium carrier.
