l-(Substituted-aryl)-dihydro-lH-pyrrolizine-3,5-¢2H,6H!-diones are effective cognition activating agents for the treatment of senility and for reversing amnesia. Pharmaceutical compositions containing these compounds and a method of treating senility or of reversing amnesia are also disclosed. The novel compounds have the general formula: wherein X and Y are independently hydrogen, alkyl of from one to six carbon atoms, alkoxy of from one to six carbon atoms, chloro- or trifluoromethyl. .
