Novel aryltriazolinone compounds of the formula <IMAGE> in which X is a chlorine or bromine atom and R is a radical selected from the group consisting of methyl, ethyl, 1-methylethyl, methoxymethyl, 2-methoxyethyl, 1-methyl-2-methoxyethyl, 2-propenyl, 2-propynyl, and 1-methyl-2-propynyl have herbicidal utility against a variety of grassy and broadleaf weeds in both preemergence and postemergence applications and show a selectivity favorable to cotton in preemergence applications.
