PURPOSE:To obtain a good signal/noise ratio, by modulating the intensity of the photoelectron emitted from a specimen to be incident to an energy analyzer and detecting the obtained photoelectron signal by a lock-in amplifier. CONSTITUTION:For example, the title apparatus is constituted by holding a specimen to the holder 9 in a vacuum container 8 and connecting an ultraviolet lamp 10 to the container 8 through a gate valve 11 and arranging an electron energy analyser 13 in opposed relation to the specimen 1. A vibrator 15 is mounted to the holder 9 and the output of the analyser 13 is inputted to a pulse counter 19 through a peak discriminator 18 to be applied to a lock-in amplifier 20. Ultraviolet rays are allowed to irradiate the specimen 1 while vibration is applied to said specimen 1 and the intensity of the photoelectron emitted from the excited specimen 1 and inputted to the an analyzer 13 is substantially modulated to be detected by the amplifier 20. Therefore, a high signal/noise ratio can be obtained. |
