A thermal insulating and/or sound absorbing structure comprises a batting of resilient, shape reforming, elongatable, nonlinear, nonflammable carbonaceous fibres which have a reversible deflection ratio of more than 1.2:1, an aspect ratio of more than 10:1 and a limited oxygen index of more than 40. The structure has a bulk density of 2.4-32 kg/m3. - Pref. the fibres are made from a carbonaceous precursor material selected from homo-, co- and terpolymers of acrylonitrile, in which the polymers contain at least 85 mole % acrylonitrile units and up to 15 mole % of one or more monovinyl units.
