The invention relates to a method and device making it possible for a user to control an electrical, electronic or computerised machine through a surface which is transparent to wavelengths and is so in both directions. It consists of a box 9, on which are arranged, on its front face 11, a plurality of optical control elements 15 designated by legends 16. An optical control element consists of a transmitter 13 and a receiver 14 which are juxtaposed. A transparent surface is placed in front of these optical control elements. The user uses this device as keypad by extending his finger 17 on to one of these optical control elements. By this action, the signal which is transmitted by the transmitter through the transparent surface is diverted once again through this surface and is detected by the receiver which indicates the action to be carried out. <IMAGE>
