The elevator car has a car frame and a composite platform. The composite platform has a first section defined by a beam member of the carframe, and a second section which is pivotally fastened to the carframe. The second section is pivotable between a shipping position, wherein the second section is perpendicular to the first section, and an operating position wherein the first and second platform sections cooperatively define the platform assembly of the elevator car.
