PURPOSE:To obtain the titled sintered body having a high m.p., low thermal expandability, narrow thermal hysteresis and superior strength by incorporating a specified amt. of the oxide of at least one among Mg, Si, Fe, Cr, Zr and a rare earth element and a specified amt. of an Li component into aluminum titanate. CONSTITUTION:Al2O3 powder is mixed with TiO2 powder in (1.3-0.7):(0.7-1.3) molar ratio and the mixture is optionally calcined and ground. The mixture is then blended with the oxide of at least one among Mg, Si, Fe, Cr, Zr and a rare earth element, e.g., MgO and an Li component, e.g., LiF. The amt. of the oxide used is 0.1-20wt.% of the amt. of the resulting blend and that of the Li component is 0.1-10wt.% (expressed in terms of LiO2). The blend is molded and sintered to obtain the titled sintered body. |
