The present invention relates to a device for protection against overvoltages. This device is characterised in that it comprises a short-circuiting means 8 consisting of a metal blade shaped like a bracket between the branches 9, 10 of which is arranged a rare-gas discharge tube 1 so that at least one 10 of the branches of the bracket 8 is insulated electrically from one 3 of the two electrodes 2, 3 of the tube 1 by way of an insulating element 14 of a fusible material including at least one secondary arc-forming gap 14a and so that a part 9 of the bracket is in electrical contact with the second electrode 2. The invention applies in particular to the protection of telephone lines against overvoltages. <IMAGE>
