In a multi-stage gearbox, particularly for vehicles, the gear stages of which are selected by means of positive-engagement clutch elements, preferably mechanical selector dogs, and which has a hydrodynamic retarder which can be engaged, disengaged and controlled by being filled and emptied, the said retarder, which is used to fulfil another function, serves as a synchroniser for the respective gearing elements participating in a selection. For this purpose, the retarder is designed as a variable retarder with an adjustable rotational speed for the rotor and is in permanent rotational connection with the gearbox input shaft. To bring about synchronism of the respective transmission elements taking part in the selection, there is furthermore a control device, with the aid of which the filling of the retarder, the disengagement of the previous selector dog and the regulation of the retarder to a gearbox input speed which corresponds to the rotational speed of the dog to be engaged is performed, thus allowing the dog to be engaged under no load.
