There is disclosed a traffic control system for vehicles and/or people, that employs a fixed station (5, 6) and a programmable element (3, 4) carred by the vehicle 3C. The vehicle 3C is provided with an infra-red transmitter-receiver pair, co-operating with a microprocessor associated with a non-volatile memory. The memory is adapted to contain data relating to the system parameters and/or data received from the fixed station. The fixed station comprises an infra-red transmitter-receiver pair co-operating with an electronic control processor. The system is suitable for controlling, recording or automatic paying at a "turnpike" or barrier or at a detection point that requires a check and/or a recording and/or a payment when crossing the same. The field of application of the present invention can concern the automation of motorway gates, public or reserved parking areas, barriers for entering reserved zones in working areas, sporting plants, theatres etc. <IMAGE>
