In a lighter, in particular a gas lighter, with an electric ignition spark generator which can be controlled by an actuating arrangement and which, for generating two consecutive ignition sparks, has two hammers or similar striking or percussion elements which are preloaded by springs, can be released with a time interval and trigger a high-voltage pulse by striking or percussion on a piezo element, and which generate two consecutive sparkovers on in particular one sparking distance, it is envisaged that the actuating arrangement has elements which make possible or bring about a delayed triggering of one hammer in relation to the triggering time of the other of the two hammers and are controllable in their delay, it being possible for the elements making possible the controllably delayed triggering to be formed by a movable part of the actuating arrangement, such as a tappet or the like, on which releasing members for the hammers are provided, which are arranged in a staggered manner in relation to one another at intervals in the direction of movement and, with advancing movement of the actuating arrangement, trigger one and, with a time interval, the other hammer consecutively from their catch positions.
