The actuation of the locking device of known height-adjustable tables is too complex. Nor is it possible to lock the tables at every height position. According to the invention, it is therefore provided, in a height-adjusting device in which the drive is effected via a torsion spring on a shaft, to assign to this shaft a braking disc which can be pushed onto a braking surface by a threaded spindle. This construction enables locking at any position of the drive shaft and hence locking at any desired height setting. The variable braking force also makes it possible to provide a device with which, in addition, also the storage force of the torsion spring can be changed. The new height-adjusting device is used for height-adjustable tables of single- or multi-column design. <IMAGE>
