A conductor of a multicore cable, especially the outer conductor of a coaxial cable, is intended to be monitored, with little circuitry complexity, for an interruption and possibly for a shortcircuit to one pole or the other of a voltage source to which a load is connected via another conductor, especially the centre conductor. The ends of the conductor (A) to be monitored are connected to the pick-offs (a, b) of two voltage dividers (R1, R2; R3, R4) which are connected to the voltage source (U); the two pick-offs (a, b) of the voltage dividers are connected to one another by means of a display element (D). One end or both ends of the said conductor (A) can be connected via further display elements (D2, D3) to the two poles of the voltage source (U).
