For the selective detection of group A streptococci directly from the primary culture with indisputable identification and detection of the microorganism to be detected with high sensitivity, a selective composition is used which is characterised by a nutrient medium which contains a combination of pyroglutamic acid ss-naphthylamide and Crystal Violet and optionally by a second nutrient medium, present separately from the first nutrient medium, which contains aesculin.
