During the automatic fitting of substrates, especially of printed circuit boards (LP) with wired components (BE), the connecting wires (AD) of the components (BE) held in a gripper (G) are intended to be inserted into the associated connecting openings (AO) in the substrate. In order to achieve a minimal fitting shadow, the gripper (G) has retaining jaws (HB) which are adjustable parallel and centrally with respect to one another and are constructed narrow at least in the retaining region for the components (BE). A pusher (P) is preferably arranged centrally between the retaining jaws (HB). This pusher (P) can be pressed in axially in a sprung manner and can be locked in the pressed-in position, and can be used to press the components (BE) against the substrate. <IMAGE>
