A non-destructive testing device for a magnetically conductive element, such as a rope, includes a housing (1) which is made up of two halves (2), (3) which are hinged together (4) and capable of being secured by a catch. The longitudinal element (8) passes through guide means (28) which position it centrally within the device (1) and magnetic poles (20), (21) of two pole pieces arranged diametrically opposite one another send a flux in one direction through the element (8). Changes in the magnetic flux internally or externally are detected by sensors (22), (23) and any breaks in the wires or corrosion which cause a change of flux is monitored with a signal able to be produced to identify the position of the fault in the element. Sensor 22 may be saddle or kidney shaped coils and sensor 23 a plurality of Hall sensor. Roller 13 may be provided connected to a shaft encoder. <IMAGE> |
