A method is disclosed for treating global ischemia resulting in free radical formation, for example, during open heart surgery by utilizing an anti-free radical effective amount of superoxide dismutase. During open heart surgery, the use of superoxide dismutase protects the heart from structural damage during re-oxygenation. |
