PURPOSE:To obtain the titled spherules having uniform particle diameter, clean surface of granule and high mechanical strength in high yield and economically, by treating the surface of spherical mesocarbon microbeads having a controlled QI amount with a solvent soluble in pitches. CONSTITUTION:Mesophase pitch having a QI amount controlled preferably to 0-70% is powdered, classified, uniformly dispersed into a dispersion medium having a higher boiling point than the softening point of the pitch powder, then the dispersion is heated to >= the softening point and stirred into emulsion to give spherical mesophase pitch. Further the spherical mesophase pitch is subjected to surface treatment with a solvent such as quinoline having high pitch solubilizing ability to give the aimed spherules having >=80% optically anisotropic range and thermally melting properties. |
