A device for lifting and handling heavy items, for example at the head of a linear support set vertically. It comprises an upright 1, a cross piece 2 fixed to rotate transversely to the upright, a suspension ring 3 carried by the cross piece, means for moving the ring along the cross piece and an arm 4 of adjustable length hinged respectively to the upright and to the cross piece to change the angle of the cross piece in relation to the upright.
