PURPOSE:To reduce the light propagation loss by subjecting the inside peripheral face and a partial outside area of a hollow fiber to ion exchange treatment to partially raise the refractive index and packing a nonlinear optical material in the hollow part. CONSTITUTION:A hollow glass fiber 11' is prepared, and the front end part of the fiber 11' is immersed in a molten liquid 13 for ion exchange and this liquid 13 is allowed to penetrate the hollow part. The inside peripheral surface and a partial outside area of the fiber 11' are subjected to ion exchange treatment to make the refractive index of the inside peripheral surface higher than that of the outside part. The front end of the fiber 11' is immersed in a molten liquid 12' of nonlinear optical materials and this liquid 12' is allowed to penetrate the hollow part of the fiber 11', and thereafter, the fiber 11' is quickly cooled. The fiber 11' in which a core 12 is packed has both ends properly cut to obtain a narrow and long columnar optical wavelength converting element 10. Thus, the light propagation loss of the element 10 is reduced. |
