PURPOSE:To prevent slackening of a ribbon, contamination or blurring of printed images from occurring and prevent a printer from being damaged, by detecting abnormal conditions such as 8 failure in a detecting switch and use of a nonstandardized thick medium by first, second and third detecting means. CONSTITUTION:A first means for recognizing whether a detecting switch 6 is in an ON state or an OFF state when a head 2 is positioned in a retracted position and for issuing an alarm when the switch 6 recognized as being in the ON state, a second means for recognizing whether the switch 6 is in the ON state or the OFF state at an intermediate point in a forward movement of the head 2 from the retracted position to such a position that an indicator 5 makes contact with a paper 100 on a platen 3 and for issuing an alarm when the switch 6 is recognized as being in the ON state, and a third means for recognizing whether the switch 6 is in the ON state or the OFF state when the head 2 is moved forward to the above-mentioned position other than the retracted position and for issuing an alarm when the switch 6 is recognized as being in the OFF state, are provided. Therefore, a failure in the switch 6 can be found out by the first, second and third means, whereas the condition where the paper is not set on the platen can be found out by the third means, while the setting of a nonstandardized thick paper can be found out by the second means. |
