The tread body of a bicycle pedal bears a plate which is connected to the tread body, in a manner pivotable about a vertical axis, at its front part relative to the direction of travel of the bicycle. A spring loads the plate in the direction of a closed position in which, together with the tread body of the pedal, it bounds a seat for receiving and locking an engagement element fastened on the sole of the shoe of the cyclist. By twisting the shoe about the said vertical axis, the plate can be moved into the opened position. When the opened position is reached, the plate is locked in this position by means of a locking element, so that the engagement element can be released from the seat in a longitudinally directed backward movement. By introducing the engagement element into the seat in an opposite direction of movement, the locking element can be automatically released.
