The invention relates to a method for the electromagnetic stirring of metal melts in a continuous casting mould, in which forces that impart rotation to the melt in horizontal planes are introduced into the said melt by the application of a magnetic field. The characteristic of the invention is that the flow of current to the coils generating the magnetic field is alternated in a cycle such that the surface of the melt remains undisturbed.
